This is a great piece to explore (and perform if you can--and hopefully give more than one performance for the work it requires). Whether you are singer, clarinetist or pianist, and want to really get your hands dirty with both music and text (certainly not just the singer needs to know the text), consider taking on this piece. I say "taking on" because it is very challenging mostly because it is quite exposed, and it takes endurance. Ultimately I found the experience quite satisfying, but you do need to work with top notch people--many colors are required and of course there are rhythmic and technical challenges as well. I would actually love to hear a tenor voice perform this piece one day (it is not specifically for soprano.) Chris, Laura and I thought that it being sung an octave lower might actually bring out some of the harmonies and various duets with the clarinet more clearly. Of course, we'd have to HEAR it to be sure (I tried a bit for fun in rehearsal, but just for a laugh of course). If you're a tenor looking for an epic contemporary piece, with a text that requires some deft expression, you would be the first to do it and I'd be very curious to hear the end results. I know Charlie would, too!
